Beaufort Sea
The Beaufort Sea is a part of the Arctic
Ocean to the north of Canada and Alaska, extending from Point Barrow to
Lands End on Prince Patrick Island and from Banks Island to the
Chukchi Sea. For most of the year, the Beaufort lies under a
cover of sea ice, breaking only in August and September. It is
named for Rear Admiral Sir Francis
Beaufort of the Royal Navy.
