McClure was part of Sir John Ross's expedition to find Sir John Franklin in 1848, and led his own Franklin expedition from 1850 to 1854. Near Banks Land, he became icebound for nearly two years, finally abandoning his ship to travel overland by sledge, where he was rescued by Captain Henry Kellett, who was making the expedition from the West. Kellett's ship was in turn icebound for another year, and both crews moved to a third ship. Among the three ships, McClure and Kellett crossed the Northwest Passage for the first time.
