Kellett rescued Sir Robert McClure after he had been icebound for nearly two years in his search for Sir John Franklin's expedition to find the Northwest Passage. Kellett's ship then became icebound for another year. After both crews moved to a third ship, the expedition returned safely home. Among the three ships, McClure and Kellett crossed the Nortwest Passage for the first time.
