Sandford and Merton
Thomas Day, 1748-89, wrote the popular didactic children's book
Sandford and Merton (3 vols., 1783-89), in which the rich
and spoiled Tommy Merton, friend of the upright and humble
farmer's son Harry Sandford, is reformed with the help of the
boys' tutor.
Wollstonecraft quotes one of the moral fables in Chapter 3.
