Novels
Novels were often held to promote immorality. Women in particular
were said to be fond of novels, whereas men were supposed to be
fond of more serious stuff -- history, essays, and theology.
Note that of the three books the Creature reads in Frankenstein,
there is one novel (Werther), one epic poem (Paradise
Lost), and one work of history (Volney's Ruins).
