Saône, France
The River Saône rises in the Monts Faucilles in eastern
France near Vioménil, and joins
the Rhône at Lyons to the south.
In its three-hundred-mile course it flows into the
Haute-Saône département near Corre, meets the Canal
de l'Est, flows to Pontailler-sur-Saône and crosses
Côte d'Or département to enter Saône-et-Loire
département. It passes Chalon-sur-Saône, Tournus,
Mâcon, and Villefranche, finally joining the Rhône.
The Saône was the site of the first demonstration of a
paddle-wheel steamboat in 1783.
