Portsmouth sports a dockyard dating from the end of the fifteenth century, and the old naval base was considerably expanded at the end of the seventeenth century. In Mary Shelley's time, it was also the principal commercial port of the south of England, and for those in the west of England, it was the most convenient point of embarkation for France.
