William Harvey

William Harvey, 1578-1657, English physician.

His Exercitatio Anatomica de Motu Cordis et Sanguinis appeared in 1628; it disproved the views of Galen and became the first accurate account of the circulation of the blood. A long string of physicians and biologists -- Cesalpino, Malpighi, Hales, Swammerdam -- made use of his discoveries.

Harvey served as physician to both James I and Charles I. A major Latin edition of Harvey's works appeared in 1766.
