Hartley developed Sir Isaac Newton's physics into a materialist psychology of the association of ideas in his Observations on Man (1749). His work was an important influence on Colerdige's early philosophical thought, and also provided a foundation for members of the Birmingham Lunar Society, including Erasmus Darwin and Priestley.
