Elizabeth, Lady Shelley
Elizabeth Pilfold was born in 1763 of a prosperous land-owning
family of Effingham, Sussex. Reputed to be a great beauty, she married Timothy Shelley in October, 1791, and gave birth to her
first-born, Percy Bysshe, the
following August. Subsequently, she was also the mother of five
daughters, only three of whom survived their infancy, (Elizabeth, Hellen,
and Mary) and of a younger son, John. She outlived her husband by two
years, dying in 1846 at the
age of 83.
