Mount Meru as Polar Paradise
Mount Meru, in the Indian Caucasus mountains, represented as the divine
lotus and as the polar paradise, from which issue the four rivers of the
world. Mythographers of the late eighteenth century conflated Meru with
Meros, the birthplace of Dionysus.
