William Wordsworth

William Wordsworth, 1770-1850, English poet.

With Samuel Taylor Coleridge he published Lyrical Ballads in 1798. This celebrated volume begins with Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and ends with Wordsworth's "Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey." Both poems are directly quoted in the course of Frankenstein: see Letter 2.5, 1.4.4, and 3.1.8.

Mary Shelley's emphasis on the bounty and balance of nature in the novel (see, for instance, 3.1.7) may testify to Wordsworth's enduring impact on her thought.
