Paradise Lost
As her epigraph Mary Shelley quotes from the fallen Adam's powerful
soliloquy questioning his creation and the conditions in which God placed
him in Eden -- Paradise Lost,
10.743-5. The epigraph is, in effect, a signal of the rich
intertextual relationship with Milton's epic poem that, beginning with
this title page, will continue throughout the novel.
