Uri

Uri, a mountainous and glacier-covered canton in central Switzerland, crossed by the valleys of the Reuss River and its tributaries.

Uri was founded early in the Middle Ages, and remained Catholic after the Reformation. After 1798, Uri was part of the Waldstätten canton in the Helvetic Republic, but regained its independence in 1803.

Mary Shelley's History of a Six Weeks' Tour recounts her visit to Lucerne and Uri.
