The Cape of Good Hope is a rocky and stormy promontory at the
southernmost tip of South Africa, discovered in 1488 by
Bartolomeu Dias.
The storms and rough seas characteristic of the area make it
exceptionally difficult to navigate. Before the opening of the
Suez Canal, however, it was the only sea route between Europe and
Asia.
