Sir John Ross

Sir John Ross, 1777-1856, English explorer.

Ross led several expeditions in search of the Northwest Passage, one in 1818, another from 1829 to 1833. The first voyage took him to Baffin Bay; on the second he discovered the Gulf of Boothia and King William Island. In 1850 he made an unsuccessful attempt (with Sir Robert McClure) to discover traces of Sir John Franklin's ill-fated expedition.
