Sir Martin Frobisher

Sir Martin Frobisher, 1535-1594, English navigator.

On three occasions -- 1576, 1577, and 1578 -- Frobisher was chosen by Queen Elizabeth to lead expeditions in the Canadian Arctic in search of the Northwest Passage. Near Baffin Island, he discovered what he wrongly believed to be gold, and spent years establishing a mining operation there. Frobisher's Bay is named for him.
